UPDATE ON ENTRY AND EXIT MIGRATORY PROCESS

It’s News! Stamp removal for migratory movements – Costa Rican’s and residents, by air and seaway.

Starting January 16th, 2023, Costa Rican’s and residents will no longer require physical stamps in their passports for country entry and departure when going through immigration controls of air and sea (exceptions apply – read section “SCOPE” below for more details).

Entry and Exit stamp update

The manual process will transition to a new MRTD (Machine Readable Travel Document), which is a computer database used for the electronic exchange of statistic data needed for proper migratory controls. It translates into simplified transactions, faster response times, and increased efficiency in travelers’ track and dispatch. Another benefit that comes with this automation, is the reduction of administrative costs of manual processes.

Migratory data will be secured and available for users in the Immigration Department (DGME) website to consult registries and movements from anywhere in the world (read section “CONSULTATION” for more details). It is also possible to request a certification through the platform of the DGME when required (read section “CERTIFICATE” for more details).
