To face the latest increase of COVID-19 cases and the precarious situation of ICU beds, the Costa Rican Government announced on April 24th, 2021, a tightening in the vehicular restrictions: starting April 27, 2021 (and until May 16, 2021) private vehicles will not be able to circulate from 9 p.m. (instead of 11 p.m.) to 5 a. m.

Commercial business with a sanitary health permit shall also close at 9 p.m.

The Government is also keeping in place the weekend plate restriction, prohibiting circulation on Saturdays to cars with plates ending in odd numbers (1-3-5-7-9) and on Sundays to those with plates ending in even numbers (0-2-4-6-8).

Within the so called “casco central” of San José (see map below), the Government is maintaining the current plate restriction schedule, prohibiting circulation of the following vehicles:

Mon:   1-2                 Tue: 3-4                    Wed: 5-6

Thu: 7-8                    Fri: 9-0

The list of exceptions to the above-mentioned vehicular restrictions remain unmodified.
